    Perfect condition.

I had heard mixed reviews of this set, but I am greatly impressed. No, this is not old-school Big Band Beethoven.
These performances follow the new Beethoven Edition by Jonathan Del Mar.
Though Simon Rattle is leaving, these performances show just how great the
Berliners sound with his tenure (and how well they listen to each other). The recorded HD Audio is one of the best I've heard.
Excellent video, also (Berlin Phil Media really has this down).
The interpretations give you Beethoven brisk and exciting, yet translucent. Not every idea
might work, but the overall survey of the 9 is well thought out. The interviews with Rattle and the
orchestra are very interesting. I'm very happy to have splurged on this box.

Orchestra plays exceptionally well, amazingly coherent as a whole and beautifully beyond belief in solo parts. If the word luxurious would apply to musicianship this is the case. Sir Simon gives direction which steps clear from massiveness of cycles popular in the past and eccentricity of some current HIP readings. Silky and weightless but never coarse, more peaceful than provoking this is the cycle from happy people for happy people. Is this cycle ultimately good? No. Good forbid to live up to one...)

I haven’t watched the blu day or listened in high definition and have only started listening to these (symphonies 1 and 3). I was disappointed on first listen- sounded very uninspired. On second listen have been taken with the beautiful cohesive sound of this great orchestra. It doesn’t have the punch and excitement of Karajan’s recordings or the outstanding recent cycle by Chailly/Gewandhaus. The edges are very smoothed. Good balance between winds/horns and strings and moments of great beauty in sound. Just feels a bit sluggish. A good document of this conductor and orchestra and brings out some interesting highlights. Will see if it grows on me. Definitely has great moments. Very high price - wish a CD only version had been released.

Update: have listened more and also listened to the high definition music downloads. I don’t hear much difference at all between the FLAC and the regular CDs. The performances just sound more and more milquetoast to me on repeated listens. I compared to Karajan’s early and late recordings of the symphonies with the Berlin Philharmoniker. There’s just no comparison. With the Karajan versions (bigger symphony and much better recording quality!) they are finely tuned, beautiful, sometimes furious works of art. These versions with Rattle are really uninspiring and bland in comparison. Dissapointing as I hoped they would showcase what he achieved after working with the Philharmoniker for many years.

Also, you can get this much cheaper from the Berlin Philharmonic website.

I should have begun listening to this set BEFORE listening to the Furtwangler Lucerne 9th. That festival performance, though far, far from impeccable in execution and miked as if it were a concerto for timpani, rewards repeated hearing in a way that none of the Rattle Beethovens can. Perhaps it's too much to expect inspiration from an orchestra playing too familiar music led by a too familiar conductor for yet another too familiar subscription concert. The performances, though erring on the hasty side, are never less than competent and are indeed superbly recorded (The audio-only blu-ray disc in 5.1 24 bit / 96 kHz is state of the art), but if there's a spark — a hint of legacy — that Rattle brings to these performances, it eludes me. The package is dazzling — a model of elegant excess with everything in every format known since the advent of the CD — but the performances, are boring and of dust-gathering irrelevance.

Overall nothing special about the performances. I'm confused by these sets that offer the same performance on multiple disc formats - you get three formats with this set: Blu-ray video (2 discs), Blu-ray audio (1 disc) and conventional CDs (5 discs). Strange packaging that houses the set, doesn't blend well with the rest of my collection.

Interpretazione splendida delle Sinfonie di Beethoven, che sta al passo con gli elevati standard esecutivi di una magnifica Orchestra e di un Direttore attento e sensibile.
