Editorial Reviews
BARBIROLLI conducts NIELSEN & MAHLER The Barbirolli Societys latest release is a 2-CD set of the complete concert given in the Free Trade Hall, Manchester on 20 October 1960, with the combined forces of the Hallé and BBC Northern Symphony Orchestras. The concert consisted of Nielsens Symphony No.5 and Mahlers Symphony No.7. Michael Kennedy, writing in 2000, stated: Performances of the (Mahler) Seventh were much rarer then than they are today, and Mahlerian scholars and enthusiasts flocked to Manchester for the event, among them Deryck Cooke who was profoundly impressed by Sir Johns ability to make the works structure cohere. This was an especially significant comment coming from Cooke, who harboured many doubts about the symphony and confessed to finding it most problematical.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2016In an unusual logistical situation, the 10/20/60 concert featured 2 orchestras, the Halle and the BBC Northern Symphony, under the direction of Sir John Barbirolli, performed a double bill of just under 2 hours- Nielsen's 5th Symphony and the Mahler 7th. Barbirolli delivered roaringly exciting, intense performances, and got an extra heft from the additional players without the 2 groups overdoing the sound. And Barbirolli grafted every piece he conducted into his, as he put it in a recorded interview I also own, " very bone and marrow." This is what made his conducting so special, even when a bit off the mark. A great set!

5.0 out of 5 stars Un symphoniste habité

5.0 out of 5 stars Sir John Interprets Two 20th Century Masterpieces
The main interest of this release to me was the Nielsen 5th which as far as I know has never been available in any recorded performance from JB. This is the first commercial release of it, and the sound is quite good. As you might guess, this music suits Sir John's interpretive gifts extremely well. Many of the same traits from his Pye recording of the 4th Symphony are evident here. The Mahler 7 (again, his only recorded performance of the piece so far released) which was once available on BBC Legends is also quite special despite some technical issues with the combined Halle/BBC Northern orchestras. Speaking of them, it is interesting to hear the two groups playing together. It makes one wish they had joined forces more often. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most anarchic side-drummer I have heard (Nielsen's 5th Symphony); terrific performance.
Mr Zubulake is right - this is a magnificent performance of the Nielsen; despite the limitations on the 1960 recording the urgency and power of the performance shines through. It is a gripping performance which had me on the edge of my seat. I can't wait to hear this work at the Proms this year. Furthermore this performance features the most anarchic side-drummer I have heard - he doesn't let up for a moment. Strongly recommended (haven't listened to the Mahler yet as I keep replaying the Nielsen).

5.0 out of 5 stars Live Mahler 7
prompt delivery and excellent packaging. the performance had me riveted. I saw Barbirolli live a few times, and this Mahler 7 has the feeling of passionate discovery. It's not safe or self-regarding, just a characterful rendering of an insane masterpiece.
