Sennheiser is shaping the Future of Audio – a vision built on a 70-year history of innovation and a continued drive for excellence that is woven into our company’s DNA and culture. Around the world, our employees share this passion in the pursuit of the perfect sound, creating products that exceed expectations and set new benchmarks in audio.
Meet the Sennheiser HD 800
Sennheiser 800 Series headphones were created with a singular goal: The pursuit of perfect sound. The HD 800 redefines the audiophile listening experience. It’s capable of breaking down the barrier between audio recording and playback equipment connecting the listener directly to an artist’s original performance. In doing this, the power of emotion is delivered through music.
The patented Ring Radiator transducer is central to the HD 800’s exceptional performance. This innovative 56 millimeter diameter driver is one of the largest used in dynamic headphones. The 40 millimeter aluminum voice coil is driven by a 42 millimeter magnet structure. The transducers diaphragm has two contact points (instead of one used in traditional drivers), at the inside and outside of the ring. Greater surface area coupled with enhanced control of two contact points deliver truly exceptional performance.
- The open back design architecture contributes to exceptional clarity, detail and dynamics.
- Angling the transducers forward of the listener ears helps deliver a wide and open spatial presentation unlike any other headphone.
- Listening to the HD 800 is like being in studio with the performers.

I'm very pleased with these headphones. They really do bring out much more detail than I even knew was on the CD or DVD. I'm listening instead of tolerating -- now, the sounds of the instruments are sometimes more important than the melody ( Dvorak trios, for instance, which were quaint, now become interesting dialogs in sound.) I'd been direct wiring my 600's to my SACD 777es, with only a couple of potentiometers for attenuation, and thought I had a very clear and open sound. I did, but only for the top. These HD 800 headphones, plugged into a not totally clean head-jack amp on an Oppo 105,brought not only more bass information but also middle information, bringing strings into the sound-stage with a very, very, sweet sound... These are not at all harsh headphones. The harshness people are talking about is maybe from lamp-wire interconnects, or spice-girl flash mixes on their CD's... or, maybe even their night-light 4000 dollar tube amps -- caramel-sauce on vanilla -- re-shaping the source material to sound 'mellow'. We KNOW tubes -- we grew up with them in the 50's.
I had thought that my next purchase would be aftermarket cables to tame these headphones. In the back of my mind was the consciousness that Sennheiser probably wanted the phones to sound exactly as they are. Now, how could that be, that these were too harsh? -- a headphone for old men with no hearing left? A trick bright sound, like cheap ear-pods for cheap musics? I couldn't reconcile what people were saying about the 800's with my 600's -- the 600's have a not-bright sound. Now,after hearing the 800's on my own system, I think the only mod I'll do is to have XLR connects on the ends of the stock cable, just so that I can go directly from the Oppo's rear output and not its headphone jack. And, too, I had tried these at Echo Audio here in Portland, and they did sound somewhat harsh, on their utility-grade head-amp, but they were so superior sounding in clarity to anything else, and the 600's -- way above the 700's by the way, which sound, simply, moogy next to the 800's, and maybe good enough if your source is moogy.
It's moronic and somewhat crushing that it costs this much to get this 25 percent better sound from my system ( yes, 25 percent, or whatever... enough to enter the music that much more, and not just look at it through an expensive shop window... something you could imagine yourself listening to live, instead of, now, actually hearing the live recording session. ), but it does. And, really, it's like lenses on a camera, with the same kinds of goal: getting a more holographic image, with light or with sound is much the same. A good lens brings all the spectrum to the plane at the same time, and, therefore, with the same amount of light for each color. That means all are equal: no blur or color shift. A good Leica or Zeiss or Canon 'L' lens is very expensive. And, that's also what good electronics and cable do for us with sound: all the pitches arrive to the ear at once, with no pushing, no overloading from some capacitance shifting which causes the flute to be clear but the piano to sound like its middle-register is made of rubber bands.
Note, though, my limitations: I'm listening to these through an Oppo 105 DVD player. I have a Sony SACD 777es, but I have to cable it to a head amp. The Oppo has a shorter signal path, and maybe that makes the Oppo sound better than the Sony. It sounds so, but that's not necessarily the case. A better CD player with a better DAC may show things about the HD 800's I hadn't noticed: it may actually be that with the HD 800's some ranges are brighter than they should sound. These are pretty good machines, though, these Oppo's.
These require 300 omhs and I recommend an Objective DAC + Amp combo. Please make sure you take time to adjust the headphone to the shape of your head both for comfort and audio reasons. Speaking of comfort, these are quite light and comfortable. The clamping force is very low. Any lower and they'll just fall off your head, and that would be no good. Earcups are very large, and even with huge ears they will fit just fine inside the cups. Padding is soft. Cable is quarter inch and braided. It exhibits no microphonics.
Yes, these are great audiophile headphones, but I'm not giving a 5/5 because they are big budget monsters. If I could give 4 and a half, that would be a definite consideration. Also, please don't read Amazon reviews like they are all valid. The z2300 from Logitech gets what, 4/5, 5/5 average reviews? Make sure you listen to the headphones before buying them unless you are really THAT rich and you just want some new toys. Stop handing out 5/5s on reviews, guys.
Please note that these are very revealing and analytical headphones. If you want to mix music, these look like a very strong contender. If you have music with subpar quality or mixed in a less-than-ideal way, it will show up in your listening experience. While this speaks to the accuracy of these headphones, some audiophiles actually prefer a different experience geared towards making the sound pleasant rather than extremely accurate. You still have the brightness issue however.

Firstly I’ve just posted this below:
The one on offer right now amazon U.K. IS a HD800
Sometimes people write it as HD800s as the plural - but really if it’s the newer model it’s usually written as HD800S vs HD800s
But always check! If the war cups are Mostly silver then it’s a HD800 and if the headphone cups are mostly black, then it’s a HD800S
Also, be very careful who you buy from. There are counterfeits going around! I’ve just received one! Ask the seller the serial number first and check if it’s registered with sennheiser. If you buy from amazon direct/ authorised dealer - then you are safe. If you buy from unauthorised third party dealer - you need to double check!!!!!
Sound wise: the HD800 sounds more open and epic to me as it’s wider but a little thin on the base side. The HD800S has stronger bass and balance - but the sound stage is a little narrower. But this gives it an advantage if you like imtamacy with sound: such as vocals. Also orchestral timbre is richer with HD800S
HD800 sounds wider and in my opinion less forward/shouty and more cerebral and epic. It’s great when you have orchestras etc- but is not ‘intimate’ but is still incredible. IMO neither is better that each other! Ideally we would have both and 2 amps that match each headphone! Hope this helps
Now why I feel it’s been discontinued: it is a case of musical fashion! As time has moved on - the HD800 is around 10 years old, technology in speakers and headphone drivers have changed vastly! There are now dynamic drivers, electrostatic etc... all offering different advantages and disadvantages. Also, More people use their phones to listen to music which are not the most perfect of sources. The phones struggle to drive these older headphones with high impedance such as 300 ohms. Music tastes have changed and people prefer a lot more base oriented music. Therefore, a newer more punchier market for HD800S has flooded the market. It doesn’t mean it’s better though. It just means it suits more people’s tastes on average. I personally prefer the HD800 and I found the HD800S a tad shouty! But everything is subjective to the amp! There is no point having these headphones without a good amp and good recordings! Honestly I have over 3000 CDs. A mix of EDM reggae pop Beatles orchestral classical jaZZ vocal Kate bush etc. With either headphone - I can only listen to about 10% of my music! If the recording is bad the headphones will reveal it and is painful to the ear and actually hurts and sounds too bright and annoying. If the recording is excellent then the headphones will transform your life! And will be wow!
Hope all helps
