I find both performances worthwhile on the whole but uneven. The first two movements of the Trout Quntet are more bland/wan
than I would like, e.g. the second theme of the first movement which requires more energy I think. The final three movements atone
partially for the first two. The third movement is quicker and more exciting, and the final two are both buoyant and lovely. In these movements Levine sounds
more like his earlier self in the Beethoven Cello sonatas with Lynn Harrell/RCA (see my review). The Hagens also sound revivified.
They also play the Death and the Maiden Quartet with vigor and intensity-quick tempi throughout. They do underemphasize the quartet's tragic. darker moments c.f the Quartetto Italiano/Philips and the Lindsays/ASV. In the Trout, peers include Serkin/Budapest/Sony,
Peter Serkin/RCA, Brendel/Cleveland Quartet/Philips (his earlier version only, not its successor with Thomas Zehetmair) and Pressler/Beaux Arts Trio/Philips

This CD is something of a bargain. In very good sound you get a delightfully fresh and imaginatively played Trout Quintet from James Levine and collaborators along with a really first class Death and the Maiden from the Hagen Quartet. The Trout is a pleasure from start to finish. You feel it was for the musicians and it certainly is for us! The account has an irresistible flow to it and plenty of lovely touches. But what makes it a little special is the feeling of fine musicians making music as friends. The Hagen's Quartet 14 is a different matter. This is both a rather serious and a very beautiful account. Both performances are well worth having even if it duplicates one or other piece in your collection.
