Product description

GOULD GLENN

Amazon.com

In the main, sonic differences between Sony Classical's 20-bit remastering of this landmark 1955 recording and its previous incarnation in the CBS Great Performances series (CBS MYK 38479) are subtle rather than striking. Tape hiss is reduced, while ambient studio noise is heightened, bringing Glenn Gould's trademark humming and squeaky chair more into the foreground. One can also perceive slight changes in microphone setups between certain variations. Gould completists, however, will want this Glenn Gould Edition transfer for two fugues recorded in 1957, drastically different from the pianist's perverse remakes 13 years later for his complete Well Tempered Clavier Book II. Any respectable piano collection, however, should include Gould's debut Goldbergs, at any price. --Jed Distler

This is a flamboyant performance of the Goldberg Variations. They are too fast and occasionally the loudness and softness of the piano is utilized, which is not available on the harpsichord. But the interpretation is brilliant. I am a purist, so I prefer the piece on the harpsichord with as much accurate performance practice as possible. Since Glenn Gould is not as brilliant as Bach, it is understandable that this performance doesn't sound as good as a more authentic one. But this is a different piece; call it "the GV according to Gould." And as a different work, it is very interesting and beautifully executed. So you should definitely have an authentic performance of the GV, and you should have this "different" work. As a musical work, it is brilliant and consists of several layers of depth. You will discover several of its depths the more you listen to it. Some of Gould's flamboyant interpretations are pompous, and they don't sound very good. This is not one of them. It sounds very good and very interesting and it remains interesting even after multiple playings. I highly recommend it.

Glenn Gould’s musical genius is clearly juxtaposed to his mental illness. Crazy though he might have been, he played so beautifully. What a fate to have to bear…😎🎼

I bought this used CD with a degree of trepidation...all it takes is one good scratch on the data side to wreck a compact disc. I needn't have worried: this CD and all packaging are flawless. If one follows the keyboard compositions of Bach, this 1st of 2 recordings by Glenn Gould of "The Golderg Variations" is priceless (I had this on CD and vinyl years ago, but misplaced both).

Anyone who has the aspirations to be a classical pianist should buy Glenn Gould's performance of the Goldberg Variations; recorded when he was only 22 years old. We live in an age where I've heard all sorts of musicians who put more into their egos; unfortunately, they lost the meaning of the word "emotion". Gould was so gifted...he plays as if the music is coming out of his fingertips. It's hard to talk about Gould in the past tense, because what he gave to classical music will live forever. He breathed life into the works he chose to play. This recording of the Variations is full of energy (just listen to Variations #6 & #27). Listen to Variation No. 26, and his emotions are there: the melody sounds as if the notes are floating above the piano... His approach is very heartfelt, which made it all the more beautiful. There is no reason NOT to buy the CD unless you don't like classical music. If you do, then the CD should be a part of your collection.

When I first played this CD I could not stand it and took it off.
Then I forced myself to listen to it to the end, still no sparks in fact it hurt my ears listening to it.
I am use to listening to Bach played by Richter, and if you like him you will not like Gould's Bach.
I would highly recommend András Schiff's version Bach: Goldberg Variations or my second choice
Tatiana Nikolayeva's version Bach: Goldberg Variations.

My father brought home the LP of this CD when I was in grade-school. But I lost track of it over the years. I was very happy to find it in CD form!

And it is everything I remember from childhood. A great recording and one
that ought to be in everyone's collection! Such touch he has! Not the same
sound as a clavichord production which is probably what Bach imagined, but a
    great sound non-the-less!

After seeing a documentary on GLenn Gould and that this was the first recording he wanted to do I just had to have it. It was not a disappointment. In fact I bought two, one for a friend as well. He is someone that I will complete his collection in due time. His expression is full of emotion how I would feel that the piece should be played. I am sure that I will wear this one out.

Look, you don't need to really be a Classical snob or focused on Classical music to have this album anymore than you have to be a jazz fan to own A Love Supreme by John Coltrane or Kind Of Blue by Miles Davis... This is a historic recording that literally blew away the world and placed Glenn Gould firmly in the consciousness of the world. A Canadian Hero, Gould is single-handedly responsible for the prowess of the Canadian Broadcasting corporation, for the world's deep reverence for artists from Canada and for just being the coolest guy in the history of Classical music... period.

Buy this. Just... buy... it. Then, be blown away by the power and vitality that Gould brings Bach.
