I own all of Segerstam's Ondine Sibelius recordings except for the recording of the Sibelius song cycle. This release of some lesser known Sibelius compositions is one of Segerstam's best. For those unaware of Leif Segerstam he has recorded two Sibelius cycles: one for Chandos and one for Ondine. Both are of very high quality, but my favorites are his Ondine recordings with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra.

One this recording Segerstam is digging into lesser known Sibelius fare. The only compositions that some listeners may be familiar with is "The Oceanides" and "Nightride and Sunrise." Both are tone poems and receive amazing performances here. Totally sensitive and exciting. The bulk here is "The Tempest Suites 1 & 2," which both are incidental music and also receive excellent readings. The audio quality is top-notch. Ondine are known for their audio and the company doesn't put out that many recordings a year (as opposed to the larger labels like EMI or Deutsche Grammophon).

If you love Sibelius' music and have been following Segerstam's Sibelius and don't own this particular release, then rest assured, it's as good as all of his other recordings. You won't be disappointed! Highly recommended.

Segerstam has recorded the symphonies, twice. I would recommend getting those first.

In these days of box sets, Ondine has not packaged the orchestral works such as these with the symphonies. I wanted the Tempest suites on one disc. This is a good performance and recording. The set has a 4 minute part entitled The Storm. If you get the Vänskä set with the works in longer form, it is the opening track. It is quite effective in the set, but 4 minutes is enough. It then goes to Suite 2 with a familiar melody to many in Miranda and some songs and dances. At least they sounded familiar.

Oceanides and Nightride are more familiar pieces, tone poems.

I chose this for my sampler of works outside the symphonies for Segerstam. He has also recorded "Jean Sibelius: Lemminkäinen Legends; Tapiola" (EMI) which you may want if you do not have them by other conductors.

Segerstam, Järvi and Vänskä are the Nordic conductors of note these days. Berglund has recent recordings but the label, Finlandia, is no more. And Berglund recently died. He has recordings of tone poems, but not these. So this may be a unique set among the Nordic conductors. Other than Vänskä who has recorded everything.

Recently Okko Kamu also recorded the Tempest suites.

For years I listened to Dennis Owens open his midnight show on classical WGMS with "Berceuse". So this album is bittersweet for the loss of that station, and for the many nights I burned the midnight oil with Dennis on the box. The whole album is a fabulous listen.

Sibelius writes enchanting music. This CD is no different. Oceanides is ethereal with ebbing and receding orchestrations representing the tidal movement of waves. All that is missing are the scents of the shore. Sometimes leaving you with feelings of ambiguity only to be followed by closure. Now The Tempest. Prepare yourself, sitting or lying in comfort, eyes closed, feeling and sensing mist-like substances like clouds made of timbres and vibrations. Movement upon movement, Sibelius treats you to a kaleidoscope of orchestral moods. Enjoy yourself, you'll be in a musical transport for over 30 minutes, and I suggest, happily so. Nightride and Sunrise I had not heard before but it equals the impressions of his fastidious, almost pedantic creations. I must say, Sibelius was one of the greats; here distant images of the Karelian Suite, there almost Mahler-like translations. This is one mighty score, folks. I do hope you enjoy it as I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real Sibelius treat!

This incidental music to the tempest is, for many, an unknown treat of Sibelius' output. His rendering of a storm at sea is probably the finest ever written by any composer. But compare that (track 10) with the delicate Berceuse (track 8) to get a real idea of his full range of dynamics, under the inimitable baton of Leif Segerstam and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. Highly recommended!
