    This is a very nice solid reading -- his is one of the really top drawer sets of the quartets (along with the Emerson Quartet, Quartetto Italiano, maybe a couple others).

    A quibble -- many CD's suffer poor pairings -- an early quartet followed by a late quartet. That's not as jarring as a CD side that pairs a Bach Cantata with Alice Cooper, but it is *jarring* and not necessary in order to fit on seven sides!

    Alban Berg Quartet have achieved the zenith of beethoven quartet performance in these great recordings. I've owned 15+ complete string quartet sets and this is still my favorite (even compared to ABQ's own live performance, which is great as well but oh well, there's always rushing passages and more errors when it comes to live performances). This re-issue is particularly worth of buying because it fixed some weird track merge issue in the previous re-issue (e.g. previously Op. 59 No. 3 had later 2 mov on the same track; same as Op. 59 No. 1 and Op. 74 etc.).

    Among the many performances I've heard, I highlight three of the most brightest (in my opinion): proposed here, Quartetto Italiano and Takacs Quartet. Alban Berg Quartet demonstrates a refined and balanced execution about which has been written many pages of reviews and I hardly add something fundamentally new about the artistic value of this set.
    But, I bought a new set, as my 1999 edition unfortunately has some traces of use. Having the experience of comparison, I can say that the new edition is not bad, but it has a little more digital grain in sound and I still prefer the old CD's.
    But I will keep both sets.

    En una caja con 7 CD'S, los ALBAN BERG QUARTETT, nos brindan una magnífica integral de los cuartetos de Beethoven. A pesar de que cuando escribo estas líneas algunos de éstos no los he escuchado todavía bajo su interpretación, si lo he hecho con los suficientes, Op. 18 y últimos, como para hacer una valoración, sobretodo en sus cuartetos finales que he comparado con otra integral, ésta a cargo de los Mosaïques con intrumentario de época y ejecución históricamente informada, como apuntaba respecto a las interpretaciones historicistas el malogrado Hogwood.
    La formación de los ALBAN BERG QUARTETT resuelve unas interpretaciones vigorosas, enérgicas, que se me antojan como muy acertadas en las composiciones del genial compositor de Bonn, A pesar de no contar probablemente - no tengo informacions al respecto- con cuerdas de tripa ni con ejecuciones respetuosamente escrupulosas, sus resultados si son muy solventes al transmitir lo que bien puede parecer al menos el espíritu Beethoveniano. Comparando los últimos cuartetos con la interpretación del Quatuor Mosaïques, los ALBAN BERG quizás no obtienen tanto matíz en la sonoridad pero si mayor expresividad con cortes secos y valientes en sus exposiciones, sobretodo en los Allegros. Aún siendo un devoto fiel de las ejecuciones historicistas y de los intrumentos de época, me quedo con esta versión, que además cuenta con todos los cuartetos y a muy buen precio. Muy recomendable sin ningún género de dudas.

    Ideal para todos aquellos que reducen su experiencia beethoveniana sólo a las sinfonías, o sonatas y los conciertos para piano, pero que hasta ahora no se han adentrado en su música de cámara.
    Aunque la grabación por momentos es ligeramente opaca, y se pierden algunos detalles armónicos, en términos generales está muy bien realizada.
