I have grown up with the Busch, Budapest, Vegh, and Talich Quartets playing this repertoire. Over the years, I added the Hollywood Quartet and the first Lindsays cycle, and most recently that of the Takacs Quartet. And now I must ask about this recording of the Smetana Quartet performances of the late Beethoven Quartets from 1961-1970: "Where has this been all my life?" What incredible depth of feeling, clarity of structure, and beauty of tone all at once! I haven't been moved by a recording of these works for quite a while. Recently I have tried to get through the Alban Berg Quartet live, the Guarneri Quartet, and the Tokyo Quartet -- all very good, but not nearly as moving as the Smetana. This Supraphon set of late Beethoven, including op.95, finely remastered in 2006, is a true classic and, as Tully Potter, said in a review, "perhaps one of the greatest of all in the period from 1960-1980."

no words can express my joy of finding this recording , not only is a superb one but the kind of interpretation is rare (considering that there are many strings quartets with a great level) what we have here is the most refine art combine with the most essential beethoven.

Great playing - second only to the Busch Quartet. I would pick the Smetna's version though simply because the actual 'modern' recordings are so much easier to live with. Extremely well priced into the bargin!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good historic recordings
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 5, 2018
I have several old recordings (Mozart, Dvorak, etc.) made by this famous group from Bohemia in the 1960s. They are all on Testament label and in mono. Their Mozart is very good indeed.

The present 3-CD set of Beethoven's late quartets (including Op.95 and Op.133 Grosse Fuge) were recorded between 1961 an 1970. They play without affectations. Opp.127 and 135 are particularly beautifully performed.

On the other hand, the tempi in glorious slow movements tend to be generally rather fast. They give an impression of efficiency rather than lyricism. This is complete opposite to older legendary groups like Busch Quartet. I think that, as far as these sublime works are concerned, slower tempi in Adagio and Lento are more appropriate. Then, they will bring out contrasts with other faster movements.

The quality of the sound is generally good because of digital remastering, but higher note sometimes sound a little harsh. There is also a slight lack of resonance. I would classify this set as historic recordings, and can be added to collectors' CD library as an alternative to more modern recordings.

This ensemble made complete recordings (on DENON label) of these quartets in the mid-1970s to 1980s toward the end of their glorious career. (They disbanded in 1989.) As far as I'm aware, they received mixed reviews by some record critics.
