- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2010I am really enjoying this book. I'm only through 3 chapters...so far I've read chapter 2- Friends, chapter 3- Parents, chapter 4- dating and sex. I skipped chapter one because I only wanted to skim through before I gave it to my 3 older children to read, but after starting to read it I couldn't put it down! I really wish I would've found this book when my oldest was 12 or 13 but I think, even though she is 17, it will still help her tremendously. I have really enjoyed the advice given by the author. I just finished reading the chapter on sex last night and He encourages young adults to raise the bar high! With great, solid advice as to how to raise the bar, why to raise the bar and how to keep the bar high. Raising the bar high means abstinence, maybe you feel someone talking about abstinence is outdated or not effective for teens after all what's the harm? I thought this was the best part of the book I had read thus far. He states several reasons why you should remain abstinent. Not only that but how to protect your "self". I am no saint and did just about anything when I was in High School and have paid the price in some form or the other. I was pregnant at 19 and married at 20. After a few years of being married the new wore off and reality set in. Talk about a wake up call. I grew up too fast and tried to recapture my youth at the age of 30 as a result. If I would have protected my "self", I truly believe my life would be very different. I wouldn't give up my life right now but I think I would've gotten to where I am now without so much pain and confusion. He also doesn't just say you should do this and shouldn't do that...He has very good reasons, facts, and well documented (with references to other books, authors, doctors, websites) information as to why you should or shouldn't do it. I also don't think he degrades anyone for the decisions they have made or will make. He has very few references to GOD which I was very impressed with. I don't particularly care for books that dictate "because the bible said so", to me this is not an answer for a teen. I truly believe that we can ingrain our ideas in our childs head but he will always take what he wants and form his own opinion on things. Therefore, we must put information that we feel is good in front of them so hopefully they will read it, take what they can from it and grow into successful adults. I can't wait to let my kids read this book and to see what they take from it. I will definatly be reposting after they read it.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2012I bought this book for a friend's daughter as an 8th grade graduation gift. I read it (from the library first). I can only say that everything the author addresses is almost exactly what I as a parent would want to tell my teen--but we parents know that teens don't always (OK hardly ever) want advice from us. The fact that the author interviewed so many teens who made both good and not-so-good choices and shared their consequences after the fact was brilliant. Teen-to-teen advice. In the chapter on maintaining a good relationship with your parents, I particularly liked one teen's take on parental insight. The teen used a math equation: Mom's age + Dad's age - my age = years of life lessons and experience they have more of than me. If you asked an 8th grader if they could help a 5th grader avoid a bad decision, like not doing their homework for a certain teacher, most likely they would say ,"Sure, I've already done 5th grade.I KNOW Mrs. So-and-so will fail you if you turn in your work late because it happened to me." The author helps them sometimes see that their parents have "already done" high school.
Also, the chapter on choosing friends and how they influence you was especially well done. I would recommend this highly for all kids going into 9th grade as mandatory summer reading!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2010My husband bugged me to get this book for our teenage boysThe 6 Most Important Decisions You'll Ever Make: A Guide for Teens. I am glad I did get it!
My youngest son, 14 years old, was not going to read it. He made a bad decision that affects our whole family, and part of his consequence is to read this book. After reading some of it, he does admit it is "kinda cool". It has turned out to be "not so bad and dumb".
I have to say, as adult, it is "cheesy". It seems to be a book geared towards 6th thru 8th graders - maybe younger. However, the stories used to explain reasons behind any decision do grab my son's attention. It is really about common sense.
Using the book like a tool, I read thru several chapters and pick out the subject/s I think is most currently pertinent to my son. I highlight important points; write down small comments next to paragraphs; "dog-ear" pages we want to reference; etc.
He would get bored with it if he had read everything!
Self help books are really hard to "sell" to teenage boys.
I think this book would make a great "read" for a 6th or 7th grade life-skill class.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2019I work with the local municipality assisting first offender youths by providing them with counseling on what they did wrong, and giving them a way to provide reparations for their actions. We have used this book as one of those means. Its straightforward, provides common issues that kids face, and it provides straightforward ways of dealing with those conflicts. I don't agree with everything in the book, but it will help the kids gain perspective and it's an easy read. I was able to read it in a couple days and be able to reference talking points from the book with the kids. (I do think if you want a child to read it, you should as well. It may help you (parent, guardian, authority figure) with some perspective as well)

5.0 out of 5 stars Teens Will Love It!
After reading Sean's "7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens", which revisited his father's 7 Habits paradigm, I gave copies to some of my pupils, who all told me how helpful it was. "The 6 Most Important Decisions" breaks new ground, and establishes Sean Covey as an independent thinker in his own right.
This book is not only solid in its content, but admirably accessible to its intended audience. This really is a book which changes people's lives - at an age when they have the opportunity to make a major positive contribution to our ailing world, and plenty of time to do so.
Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most important decisions you will ever make

5.0 out of 5 stars A CRITICAL book for those looking to empower teens
As a Coach/Consultant who trains on the Coveys' content, I make no secret about it - I love all material by any of the Coveys. From Sean, Stephen and their dad - Stephen...to John and Jane their work is timeless. This book is no different. It is a MUST! A most crucial book to read if you have or want to teach young minds about vital decisions and informed choices that can impact lifelong outcomes. If you're a young person - read this book and critically think about each area, how it will affect you and what you can do about it. If you're a parent, or helping adult, think about ways to infuse this into your everyday life/work. The consequences for not thinking and talking about these 6 choices are far too great to make from an uninformed position! Do not let this book go unread! :)
